what is happening and why and does beans have a meaning
It spread to the rest of Lemmy after Hexbear federated a few years ago. Hexbear’s been beanposting since the pandemic:

You gotta ask Nicole about that.
i know who that was
its probably about that d*xxing fiasco
Now we’re speaking of ancient evil, aren’t we?

Say it out loud.
Now say it again.
As I remember it (and I have a terrible memory), the fedi beans memes started pretty early on, like 2018, and came from a place of “we don’t get trending memes from other platforms so let’s start our own.” I think it came to lemmy from other fedi platforms pretty early on, and gets deployed periodically as a kind of palate cleanser. I blame the Brits, but I don’t have evidence to support that.
Yeah, it was “reddit has bacon and narwhals, we need our own thing!!”
Meaning it was completely inorganic and painfully lame. As a whole, Lemmy should all hold up a spork and call itself tEh PeNgUiN oF dOoM for being so quirky and random
“When in doubt, blame the Brits” is actually pretty solid general advice that I hadn’t considered before.
I don’t think we are to blame for the beans thing (we prefer our beans as baked beans).
As a rule of thumb though, we can be blamed for far too much stuff. You need to include the french too however. They got up to almost as much “shenanigans”.

I mean, they like their beans
What’s the green goo in the middle of the tray?
Mushed peas
Yummy!
This is epic
Are the Brits a tit again
The British are always at it like California is always on fire.
The answer is always yes.
Works great for us natives, for a couple hundred years plus now
As a brit I agree with this
It’s a reasonable take, I swear! Most fedi platforms seem to have an English-speaking population that is ~50% Germans speaking English, ~25% the UK and the rest is a smattering of other English speakers. Lemmy, in my experience, is the odd one out with regards to US defaultism.
What happened to Canada?
Nothing specific, just noting that the Brits have a long history of brutal imperialism. On the other hand, they’re the reason many countries have a holiday where they celebrate their independence.
It was more like 2022
Considering Lemmy itself only came to be in 2019, i tend to believe you.
I plead terrible memory and accept this may be more accurate
Beans there, done that.
I believe this was the post that started it: https://sh.itjust.works/post/715364
Beans and potatoes man… both are goats
I miss moths
Same reason they say narwal and bacon on reddit.
Yep. Tge bacon naarwals at midnight
It’s a great source of protein, and cheap.
Especially if you buy them raw and cook yourself.
And they’re great if you personally wish to be a significant methane source
Oh so that’s why my dupes couldn’t keep the methane generator running - I wasn’t feeding them beans!
They’re good for your heart.
The more you eat them, the more you fart.
It’s not really a linear relationship. It does plateau and even go down.
And anyway, bean farts are so innocent. They’re practically a feature. Toot-toot!
The more you fart the better you feel.
So let’s have beans with every meal!
I always heard, “and now you’re ready for another meal!” growing up.
I’ve also heard, “Beans, beans, the magical fruit. The more you eat, the more you toot.”
Hello Liam
Beans is just a Lemmy/Fediverse meme
In the early days of Lemmy you were only allowed to post about beans and if you strayed off topic Mothra would come get you.
Now we discuss all sorts of things, like beans.
Oh, and beans.
Despite never being a fan of guy-in-rubber-suit-trashes-miniature-city-movies, I somehow know who Mothra is.
wait be honest, does it mean nothing at all
and has no meaning
It means…
B E A N S
(yes, it has no meaning other than the word beans and the picture of Heinz beans. That’s it, you got it right)The real beans are the friends we made along the way.
Beans means beans.

Give em the beans old boy!
Ancient Lemmy lore. Back when it was only beans.
First there were beans, and beans were tasty
