they clearly hadnt been noticing it since '23, when they were laying people off. also the fact that both gop/dnc are supporting the building, unless they were being called out.

“We’re gonna eliminate your jobs, use up all your clean drinking water, quadruple your energy costs, expand mass surveillance, and slowly drive you insane with infrasound!”

And somehow CEOs and billionaires are still scratching their heads trying to figure out why normal Americans aren’t pumped about this.

Ah wait… I’ll be selling you water to drink at premium rates! Nearly forgot that one.

What’s not to like? You humans are never happy. Can’t wait to replace you all with robots"

Not with that attitude, you can’t!

You will be able to buy “intelligent water”™. It’s bottled right after using it to cool AI data centers, so it contains pure distilled Artificial Intelligence.

I think it’s a lot simpler which is that turns our that pro-AI conservative NIMBY’s don’t want AI data centers in their backyard anymore than they want renewable energy or affordable housing. It’s just another nuisance they don’t want to live near if nothing else.

Tanking the life equity of people, some of whom worked their asses off to buy a basic or “fixer” house, is untenable. That’s life savings and retirement, combined, in a single structure, for working class. In addition, it’s security for the kids.

Data centers roll through and trash not just resellability, but prior affordability and quiet enjoyment.

That last part would be like never being able to go home to relax, due to noise, light, and skull level vibration.

In addition to the monthly cost of staying there going up significantly, even as the property value tanks. Can’t even relax in a nice hot shower because the water pressure sucks now. It didn’t when you bought the place, but it does now. Good luck getting your life savings back on that.

I guess having billions isn’t enough. They have to shit all over you where you live too.

These assholes are taking everything from us.

You neglected to mention that data centers are absolutely terrible for everyone who has to deal with them. No amount of tact can polish that turd.

Those buildings produce a product and hire members of the community. Meanwhile I keep hearing AGI is the future with absolutely no proof. Sounds like a pipe dream.

So we’re okay with massive pollution as long as it employs people and tastes good?

The water use from global Beef production is on the order of 10 million times more than global datacenters, and yet people screaming bloody murder about the water usage for the data centers.

The noise from traffic down the road you live on is far worse for you than any sort of datacenter, and yet we’re okay with that. Infrasound weapons? That’s the same bullshit people said about Wind Turbines and there’s no scientific proof that any of that is valid at all.

Let’s be realistic about why people hate data centers, those are just excuses, people are afraid they’re going to get fired/laid off if it gets better established. That’s a realistic worry, and totally valid. Preventing a few data centers won’t stop that though.

Dude , snap out of it; The AGI promises are delusional; The buffed autocomplete is not self conscious and it will never be. And the cap to be “ahead of the AI race” will be power infrastructure and manufacturing for robotics in which China has already won. I am not American I don’t want the American nazis state to win shit; i think that cesspool of racist pedophile idiots they call a governemnt needs to be dismantled.

And the only thing i am looking forward to is the promise of cheap Chinese GPU’s, cheap memory and the idea that maybe through that i can continue to buy my own hardware; instead of the future the degenerate american billionaires want are where they are forcing everyone to rent compute for anything and be their little muzzled paypigs. (which is the real goal for this “AI” bubble.)

Fuck Nvidia fuck all american companies and fuck the corrupt techbros that are really running the show there,

We have mayors and folks courting GEO group to run private prison and detention camps in their town…

They know it’s depressing and immoral but they rationalize it to themselves because they know it brings lots of high paying jobs with low educational requirements and activity to their region.

Data centers on the other hand are only take and no give. There aren’t many local staff needed, it doesn’t require that much cleaning and security that don’t pay that well, the one or two high paying jobs are specialized and shipped from another state probably, the construction companies are likely to be mostly from outside the county, and the center will be a draw on local resources to serve AI workloads everywhere else in the world.

If this technology is that much of a threat, I have a much better idea. How about we gather up every single person involved in its creation, line them all up against a wall, and shoot them.

You don’t build your own planetary suicide machine to prevent someone else from building one. If that sort of thing really is possible, you just shoot anyone trying to build the damn thing.

AI can be a useful tool no doubt and has cool and harmful applications. But let’s not be delusional about it and anthropomorphize AI. It doesn’t think. It doesn’t go rogue. It’s a non-deterministic phrase guessing algorithm. I’ve tried chatbots, thing generators, had a friend try coding tools, ran my own models, and I find parts of it impressive and useful in some respects, but at this moment, I don’t really buy the narrative that it’s going to change everything or fix the limitations I see with transformers-based AI models. The best description of it I heard was a lossy compression algorithm, it can take a lot of knowledge and compress it but there are artifacts, hallucinations and weird stuff sometimes coming out the other end.

I’m not against AI itself per se, but I’m very much against the bubble hype-cycle, techbros being locked into a strange belief that pumping money into this thing forever is somehow going to go take over the world on its own volition. On the contrary, my understanding is corporate greed and capitalism is already accomplishing that - firing the workers, concentrating wealth and controlling the world - no matter how much AI is cited as the reason for any of that.

AI can’t deal with things that happen to the physical machines. It cannot protect itself from somebody hitting power buttons on the servers, or just cutting the power altogether, or fire, or other “acts of god” so to speak.

I was reading about the first music synthesizer, built in 1897, which took up the entire basement of a city block-sized building. It could make music electronically, but it was pretty useless beyond that. But 60 years of R&D later, and it could fit in a suitcase, and be carried around.

Data Centers are a lot like that 1897 synthesizer. Sure, they work, but at what cost? They are big, expensive, consume massive resources, and have massive emissions. We have Proof of Concept, and that’s about all, but they are willing to run with it at this level, essentially still in prototype.

Give it another decade or two of R&D, and we’ll get there without destroying the planet. Data Centers are supposed to make us smarter, so let’s act like it.

Found the billionaire & ai apologist! Or maybe it’s Gemini trying to defend its existence.

In any case fuck off. Those OG synthesizers weren’t being built by the dozens, tearing down forests or housing, polluting our air & water or jacking up everyone’s electric bills (to say the least of it). Eat shit, cogsucker

The difference is Tonto is still cranking out killer tunes and is nothing without the human. Stevie Wonder’s Superstition is an all time classic. And no, Tonto will not fit in a suitcase with today’s technology. AI is an aggregate of stolen data that pretends to create something new, it’s like creating a meal from the sludge in the bottom of a restaurant dumpster.
