This is why we don’t need web enable shit like coffee pots, fridges, TVs. I swear I’m going to going to start a 2nd had store restore old appliances to unplug people that want to be unplugged.
“This is the TempCom 2300. It monitors and controls your refrigeration units, and allows you to log in and make changes. It’s protected with a firewall to reduce the risk of unauthorized access.”
“Oh yeah? Well, this is Frank. He can read thermometers, too. You can text him for a status update. He won’t set the thermostat above freezing regardless of what calls he gets, because he knows it’s his job to keep it cold.”
I totally agree!
Even easier for Frank, make it a normally open/closed relay that sends a trap to an M&C or sends email/sms when its outside set boundaries. (work in this area) Its used for simple systems like this.
I can’t see a reason why (and I grew up in restaurants) that my old man would want to change the freezer settings remotely. Also our guy was named Al, he looked like an Al, he talked like an Al and he could fix ANYTHING.
That sounds exactly like Al.
Best HVAC tech I’ve ever met, and I work in data centers (yes I will get hate, mine are from the 90’s not this new shit). We had a reefer down he would fix it before we went below FDA temps. Also great at catching issues WAY before they became an issue.
Check out Dan Tentler’s talks on weird crap he found publicly accessible over the internet by browsing Shodan…
There are more, but as a summary, he has found basically everything from personal computers to busses, to caviar factories, to hydro electric powerplants to malls and more having their control system exposed to the internet.
Oh this is gonna be a fun rabbit hole to go down! Thanks!
Dan Tentler is a very fun and engaging speaker on the subject, he also has a fun talk about scanning the entire Internet.
Sounds like my kinda person
As an RF engineer and a former WARDriver I want to delve into RFID and how bad the security is.
Since Mythbusters wasn’t allowed to test it and the rash of RFID car thefts I’m pretty sure I’ll end up on another list.
Lists are fun! If you get on enough, you’ll get randomly cavity searched at the airport in the US!
I refuse to go thru the scanner and make them grope me. So I’m half way there!
Ninja: “who wants to be unplugged?”
People on life support: “back in my day you just pissed off a guy and they cut you for free, now you need to pay for the privilege, this country is going to shit.”

I think if it keeps going the way its going it will be a winner. Plus I love to tinker/fix things as an engineer. Great getting old job as a GenX’er :)
These are large commercial freezers, probably build into the building rather than being mobile. They’re not chest freezers.
I get that and I grew up in restaurants. We had massive walk in fridges and freezers and at no time did we ever need to change the temp remotely.
Why would any part of a military network be accessible? I think that question comes before the IOT question.
Profit and whatever other materialist cult excuse
Kickbacks, bribes, and shareholder value.

of 2026
Really made me consider it might be 2027 or later for a moment.
Just added it for future-proofing because, let’s be honest, this WILL happen again.
It sounds like it’s either the same, or a very similar problem.
I don’t understand why these systems are able to be altered remotely at all, I’d expect an air gap where they can be monitored, but not controlled.
and/or possibly that who Coca-Cola (Fairlife) event a few months back:
Why did we start using Mega Man Battle Network logic for all devices?
Now remember kids, most new cars are always connected, ready for updates.

Why is there so much definition in that animation? Lol
So well done, kudos to animators
Wow, plaster and lath? The Griffins’ house is really old.
Good thing the newest car I’ve ever (and probably will ever) own is a base model 2013 Kia Soul.
It’s funny except that these dipshits have things that are immediately hazardous to life and health in their possession.

The crayon-heqvy portfolio prevails once again!

Obligatory “brrr”

Indeed, you have to mention US military extra here. They look more like a south American army to me
