What’s a little extra 5 or 10 mph on the clock?

Good luck telling that to your average moron on the road

We don’t live in fantasy land where common sense exists and we have to work around that

Sure, but just because they are morons, doesn’t mean I have to drive faster than what I deem is safe.

The safest speed is nearly always the average speed of traffic, this is well studied…

That is true, but that doesn’t mean I feel safe driving as fast as other drivers. It doesn’t mean I feel confident in my ability to react in time, if something was to happen a few cars ahead. Is it statistically safest? Absolutely, but that doesn’t mean everyone is equally safe going that speed.

If you don’t feel confident driving the usual flow of traffic you shouldn’t be driving

So many times I’ve had to slam on brakes to let an idiot get back in their side after a pass because some slowpoke idiot is doing 60kmph on a 100kmph road and a whole column is passing them

If you don’t speed tf up you will get yourself or someone else killed

When you’re alone on the road drive whatever speed you like

We’re generally talking about people driving over the speedlimit on this post. Someone doing 60km/h in a 100 km/h zone isn’t the point of discussion. Someone driving 120 km/h in a 100 km/h zone is the problem. You can’t blame the people simply following the laws for the actions of people breaking the laws.

                  1. What’s most safe, everyone driving 100 km/h or everyone driving 120 km/h? 100 km/h, so it’s not the slow drivers that are unsafe, it’s the idiots driving faster than the limit.

                  2. Are you seriously asking people to risk a fine, their drivers license and depending on their job, their livelyhood, just because you’re more important than the law? In this economy?

I never said I think that society as a whole should drive faster, I said that the safest speed is the average speed. You don’t lower the speed by putting up signs or blindly driving slower than traffic. You lower it by narrowing lanes, crowding the clear zone, and implementing other physical calming measures (sharper corners, speed bumps, trees overhnging, etc).

I dont make decisions based on some ideological stance on how things “should” be, I make decisions based on the reality I live in. In reality, what we both live in, the safest speed to drive is objectively, the average speed of traffic. You’re certainly free to drive 20 km/h below the average speed, but you’re getting down voted because it is an ideological stance not based in reality.
