Listen, sport, what you don’t understand is that you can be a great mechanic, but that doesn’t mean that you know SHIT about the race. Fact is, you’re gonna just carefully turn your corners, brake when you should accelerate, and stay in the pit when you could be circling those losers on two broken axles. Yeah, sure, you risk a little spinout once in a while. You just gotta get the car back straight and get in the race again. And yeah, you might crash. That’s why you wear a flame-retardant suit. And yeah, the fiery explosion might kill, maim, and injure all the fans, their children, burn all the small defenceless animals in the vicinity, and the resulting pollutants will likely give cancer to the staff & crew. But that’s what the insurance is for! And yeah, it’s expensive, but y’all got to get together and pool your money, or else people in the racing seat don’t get their trophies for winning, or exorbitant salaries as consolation prizes.

31·7 days agoOkay, so I have no idea about streaming services, but commercials on broadcast TV never had the volume increased but the compression.
(I love getting lost in details so apologies if any of this comes off condescending.) Compression works by making the quieter parts louder, without distorting the louder parts.
THINK of a SENTENCE where SOME of the WORDS are LOUD and OTHER words are QUIETER.
compression works by squishing down all the loud parts, then bringing everything back up to full volume, so the previous sentence would become:
THINK OF A SENTENCE WHERE SOME OF THE WORDS ARE LOUD AND OTHER WORDS ARE QUIETER.
Now, the loud parts didn’t become louder. What happened is that the quieter parts got louder. You lose the dynamic, but gain volume. If you think it would just be exhausting, you’re correct - even at low volumes, you can get a sense of ear fatigue when audio is heavily compressed.
Now, if you want to know why movies have quiet parts where you can’t hear shit and loud parts that are way louder, this is called dynamics. Artistically, you very much want this for the same reason you want quiet parts and loud parts in classical music. If everything is constantly loud, the dramatic moments won’t feel as impactful.
“But wait, I don’t enjoy that, I like having my TV at a reasonable volume!” Yup, me too. It’s fucking annoying. Mixing is done often on high quality speakers, loud volume, so you can get every detail. Most home setups dont have that nuance, and most people don’t care. Until execs can actually get proven that they’ll make more money by having consistent compression, you’re shit out of luck. You’ll probably have to get your own compression, either through software or hardware.

581·14 days agoIt’s because most anvils were tuned to G. It was considered the original root scale step because anvils often worked best when tuned to G. But back in those days, it was called Sol (Solfège.) In french, Sol means ground, which is at the bottom. Ergo, every hammer driven by the smith was really just a sort of mating call that sent all the bottoms running to the smith’s doorstep. This is where the expression “she built like an anvil” comes from

If you want to be somewhat “diplomatic,” what I’ll do is give a response depending from whom it comes from.
Not my boss: “please check with my boss to see if he wants me to drop anything to help you.”
my boss: “I’m doing x, y, and z. Which do you want me to drop so I can do this new task?”
