- we just learned how to make them fairly recently
- expensive to build
- expensive to run
- fucking massive if powerful enough to be useful
I don’t hate AI as a technology/tool. I hate cloud-based and corporation driven/controlled AI. I hate that companies are shoving it down our throats and implementing it in the least useful and most destructive ways possible.
if I could get (for a reasonable price) a computer powerful enough to actually use some light agentic ai locally I could probably find a bunch of shit it would be genuinely helpful for. however, due to the current state of it all you can really do in most cases is rip off art or almost get a straight answer on a simple question, and it always goes through a massive datacenter halfway across the country (or globe, depending on where you are).

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do YOU watch subtitled or dubbed anime?
111·9 days agoI watch subbed because the dub is almost always shit. only problem with that is the subbed voice acting tends to be a lot hornier

Technology@lemmy.world•Valve antitrust lawsuit reportedly reveals lengths Steam owner is willing to go to prevent cheaper prices elsewhere
248·12 days agoyou can get cheaper prices elsewhere all the time. look at humble bundle (idk if they’re still around but thats where a lot of my games came from a while back), green man gaming, or any of the console app stores. depending on who has sales when games are cheaper all the time. y’all are falling for propaganda trying to discredit one of the only decent companies left in gaming written by their competitors and their competitors’ friends. try thinking a little before just following the social media hive mind because you’ve spent the last couple decades seeing proof that this is a blatant lie.

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Dev Says He’s Getting Threats After Leaving a Booby Trap for Vibe Coders
1·12 days agoI’m not gonna sit here and argue about whether it’s ok to eat meat or not. the point is that supporting cloud-based AI is taking up a ton of resources and isn’t providing much benefit for it compared to local AI. not sure why you took it in that direction in the first place, but using up nearly all of our ability to manufacture computer parts, large areas of land, lots of electricity, and lots of clean water, all for barely any benefit, is much worse in terms of resource usage (again, not going to argue about the morality of meat here) than sustaining cattle.

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Dev Says He’s Getting Threats After Leaving a Booby Trap for Vibe Coders
2·13 days agoI mean the meat industry (fucked up as the factory farms are) produces food. that’s very different from the ai industry, which in it’s current state produces nothing of value. I get your point, but comparing where a lot of our food comes from to the ai industry isn’t really a fair comparison.

1·14 days agoI guess they found a use case. I kinda use Gemini as one sometimes for pulling stuff from a picture of a PowerPoint and putting it in my schedule or for aggregating info about a group of products I’m trying to choose between. personally I don’t see much use for ai in general beyond menial stuff like that but that stuff actually is pretty nice aside from the whole ‘destroying the environment, economy, and several industries’ part. almost makes me want to get a computer that can run it locally just so I can try and find a use case without the destruction.

15·16 days agoany usage of ai that allows it to execute tasks beyond simply outputting something to the user. if it interacts with stuff (especially with some degree of autonomy) it’s an agent.

Technology@lemmy.world•It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12
4·16 days agoyeah the framework 12 doesn’t make a lot of sense bc the price point is way too high. kinda sucks bc if it was at more of a Chromebook type of price point it would be undoubtedly the best option for schools.

1·17 days agoyeah, shows that they actually give a damn about what they sold you. always nice to know that they’re gonna make sure what I paid for will still work right. it’s part of why I love indie games so much. you can reach out to the dev like 10 years after they stopped working on it and let them know about a minor bug and it’ll be fixed like the next day.
edit: spelling
