“Steam Controller ran out faster than we anticipated, and we hate that not everyone who wanted one was able to get it. We’re working on getting more in stock and will have an update on expected timeline soon.”

Kinda reminds me of a poster I saw today advertising a communist group and an anti-billionaire rally. Had a QR code to follow them on Instagram and X. 🙄

Reminds me of a local pro-privacy group I came across a while back, whose only public online presence was a Facebook group.

Like I get it from a “reach” standpoint, and I think it’s fine if you’re following a POSSE system, but I feel a lot of people don’t do that.

And at the very least, they shouldn’t be paying the fascists running it $2,000 a year to be there.

There’s a decent chance an account as big as Valve gets the “premium business” bullshit for free. Not sure if there’s a way to tell but it’s definitely possible.

Only a rumor, but I’ve heard Gabe Newell is friendly and social with Elon Musk, as a fellow billionaire.

I think it was confirmed that they’re friends or at least used to be in like 2019. Not sure how it is now with how far off the deep end musk went.

They should diversify where they post and help guide people to those other platforms, but just leaving X altogether wouldn’t accomplish anything. They need to talk to the people where they are

Its easier to onboard people by having stubborn people use multiple apps instead of a full switch right away. So X, Bluesky, and Mastodon in this case getting them off X bit by bit. Another being Instagram and Pixelfed. Reddit with Piefed, and Voyager for Lemmy/Lemmy. Etc.

That’s what has worked for me to get others that are tough to get off those platforms off them overtime instead of in one moment

Convince the user base to switch platforms first, and the companies will follow.

Every time they make a news announcement on a different platform, just make a tweet that says “Hey, Valve news update here: <link>. BTW, fuck Elon”

Easier said than done but they’d hardly be the first.

Honestly I don’t even blame them for underestimating demand. Based on comments here and my own personal intuition, I would’ve guessed that it would’ve sold great, to a very niche audience.

Maybe it has more widespread demand than expected, those track pads make it amazing for any couch PC usage, gaming or not, and many existing SteamDeck owners like myself are already aware of this.

It wouldn’t have cost them anything to say “we’re opening up orders to users who have had a Steam account for at least 2 years, limit 2 per account. After 30 days we’ll open it up to everyone. “

That alone would have stopped so much scalping, and garnered goodwill with the players.

PSA: don’t buy any from eBay. fuck scalpers.

if you don’t buy it they won’t sell it. if they don’t sell it, they won’t buy more.

People reselling stuff for profit is the cornerstone of capitalism.

They are wholly different situations, and it’s astonishing you went there for a rebuttal.

I’m not anti-capitalism like the other guy, but I still need to correct your first bit. I’d rephrase it as “People adding value to something then reselling it is the cornerstone of (uncorrupted) capitalism.” “Adding value” can be lots of things, even something as simple as collecting a bunch of related products together in a more accessible, easily browsed format, i.e. what your average retail store does.

Scalping does not add value. It leaches it. You could try saying it adds value to someone who couldn’t be present during the original sale, but it does that by robbing the purchase opportunity from someone else while adding an exorbitant middle-man tax, so there’s no net gain in the system. It shouldn’t matter what platform or legal rules exist. It should be enough that it’s obviously unethical.

The closest I’ll come to saying something like scalping is okay is when someone resells a product forclose to the original price to people left out of the original market.

That doesn’t mean you go and abuse someone’s reporting system for something that’s not against their rules or their countries sellers rules.

You just seem to be very angry about this, chill out dude.
