Fringe was great when it was a mystery-of-the-week series. I lost all interest when it went into…whatever it was trying for in the last few seasons.

Like all Bad Robot productions. Mystery boxes are only interesting if you keep the lid on. That’s why it’s a really shortsighted writing style.

Ah, but who controls the lid???!!??

        The government, and aliens.

Ah, but who is the guy in the place with the spooky music who knows about aliens???!???

        Government dad.

Ah, but who is government mum??? … etc.

Matrioshka mystery boxes get dull after a while.

Eh, if you have a really good idea for mystery, and a really good plan for taking the lid off, it’s actually very satisfying. If you didn’t actually put anything in the mystery box then yeah keep the lid on; you can get by like that. But if there’s actually something in there, and you have an exit strategy planned, it’s basically peak media.
