The Chinese don’t give a damn what you do outside of China (unless it is a universal crime like robbery or murder). But one thing I would suggest you do is that if you go, get new clothes to take with you and new shoes. I live in a place where marijuana use is fairly common, and while that is no big deal, if they find marijuana residue on your clothes they might still arrest you even if you don’t use marijuana and are unaware that it was on you.

This is what happened to someone in Dubai who was sentenced to 4 years for 0.003 grams of marijuana on his shoe. China is a country that similarly has a zero-tolerance policy regarding drugs, and Chinese media portrays drug smugglers and users in ways that would make an 80s action movie hero blush. This is probably owing to the cultural trauma they had with the opium wars and opium use (which was primarily introduced to them by the British, but the world then acted like it was an age old problem that they needed kind white folk to help them with. The CCP after the Chinese Civil War adopted such a draconian anti-drug war that drug manufacture disappeared… they would basically massacre entire villages if they found any drugs being produced or grown).

Don’t forget to bring a burner phone and do not criticize the government or something.

There are around 100 Canadians wrongfully imprisoned in China, and thousands of other foreign nationals.

Canada is one of the last few countries where you can get a burner phone with no issue. They sell prepaid SIM cards at dollar stores and even supermarkets really cheap. Once my current phone is paid off and I get a GrapheneOS capable phone (or see if I can fully refurbish my water damaged Motorola G5 Power) I will still keep my shitty Samsung S23 with a prepaid card for ‘burner’ applications if I ever need to travel and still not draw unwanted attention for having a privacy based OS. I will shred all files and free space on my Samsung first before giving it a factory reset when that day comes.

Ah yes, wrongly imprisoned like the two spies we sent there in retaliation to us kidnapping a CFO of one of their major companies at the behest of the burger reich, who is an actual civilian. I guess it would be really inconvenient for propagandists like you if people actually start going to China and seeing it for themselves.

I was dubious of Dubai guy getting sentenced for .003 g of reefer on his shoe, as well.

The hilarious (and concerning) part of your comment is that you really believe your 10-day trip to China as a tourist and some images on the web give you a real impression about the country and its government. You know nothing about that topic.

The only concerning part here is that somebody who’s never been to China, never talked to people who live there, and likely couldn’t find it on a map, has strong opinions about the country.
