World News@lemmy.world•Brazil Puts Forward Global Plan to Wean World Off Fossil FuelsEnglish
4·3 days agoThat sadly doesn’t work terribly well (we burn a lot of methane producing fertilizer for the corn) and doesn’t scale up to the world.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google Will Turn Off Search for Schools That Reject A.I.English
32·3 days agoUm what? Self-hosting search that actually covers the internet requires way more resources than people are likely to have. There are things you can self-host, but global internet search is not one of them.

3·3 days agoThis is what happens when companies are incentivized to turn on data centers fast above any kind of environmental protection or efficiency goal.

News@lemmy.world•New US Data Centers Projected to Emit More Carbon Than All of Mexico
1·8 days agoWater that salty is corrosive. You can’t just use it for datacenter cooling (or running a power plant) without removing the salt at considerable cost. It’s cheaper to bribe politicians to transfer fresh water into their use than it is to desalinate that and use it.

News@lemmy.world•New US Data Centers Projected to Emit More Carbon Than All of Mexico
1·8 days agoI’m not looking for a silver bullet. But part of success is demand avoidance. And creating demand at the scale the datacenters are doing is going to make it far far harder to get to zero.

News@lemmy.world•New US Data Centers Projected to Emit More Carbon Than All of Mexico
1·9 days agoA single new datacenter in the pipeline from Amazon is going to consume above 7000MW. Landfill can and should be burned in useful ways, but it’s not going to supply anything like what the tech industry is planning to use.

News@lemmy.world•New US Data Centers Projected to Emit More Carbon Than All of Mexico
4·9 days agoBrownfield development would be perfect for data centers, but it’s slower and costs more.
There isn’t undesired water or electricity sources available at anything like the scale the AI companies want though; these things use truly huge amounts of energy

News@lemmy.world•What the U.S. Is Really Doing in Venezuela: Suppressing democracy and extracting resources at the expense of its people
2·14 days agoThat’s really insane, given how people I know left Venezuela because of a lack of food
Be really nice to build some local community so that you can both self host and have this kind of support if you need it

What’s actually working for transport is battery-electric. About half the heavy trucks in China sold in the past few months have been done like that.
My expectation is that we’ll see solar to hydrogen used for decarbonizing the chemicals industry, but not much else, largely because batteries have gotten so cheap and so energy dense.
