Guessing it was a .22 pistol and he was basically point blank. Having shot a lot of .22, ~1/15 actually penetrating the skull and killing it makes sense. Hits from a .22 in the right (wrong?) spot and/or far enough away will fail to penetrate a human skull, and we don’t fight with our heads.
