I want to officially celebrate the release of Summit on F-Droid.
Although the app has been available on F-Droid for about a week now, I waited until the 1.82 release F-Droid to make the announcement in order to get everything ready and updated.
Launching on F-Droid has taken a lot of effort so we are celebrating in the release notes. In many ways, the biggest project in this release is getting the app ready for F-Droid. This includes updating all of the links, graphics and websites.
Now onto the 1.82 release. This update brings more quality of life improvements. The big one is a much more powerful duplicate post detection system. It’s never fun to see the same post twice so this feature aims to eliminate seeing duplicate posts forever (as long as you are on the same account). The original feature was introduced many versions ago but it was an experimental feature and it has never worked very well.
The other big change introduced in 1.82 is the inclusion of per-user scores. You may notice these scores appear beside usernames. They display the total times you’ve upvoted a particular user minus the times you’ve downvoted them. Credit to Voyager which I think is where this idea came from initially.
Full changelog
- Add per-user scores in post/comment headers. Enabled by default. Can be disabled in settings (Settings > Misc > Per-user scores).
- Add “Change feed” button to the top bar so it’s easier to discover.
- Greatly improve the duplicate post detector. Can be disabled in settings (Settings > Posts feed > Mark duplicate posts as read).
- Change default for “hide banner if no banner” from off to on.
- Change default community back to
lemmy.world. Done for UX reasons since the changelog is hosted on that instance. - Fix a bug where the block instance button doesn’t do anything on the instance information screen.
- Fix gesture conflicts on the image preview screen.
- Fix a crash due to the new PieFed comment reporting endpoints.
Update
Releasing an update to address some bugs. Update version is v1.82.3.
- Fix a bug where the emoji selector doesn’t show up sometimes.
- Fix a bug where the ¯\(ツ)/¯ emoji is not escaped correctly.
- Fix a bug where the alt-text field expects a URL when it should expect text.
- Fix a crash that occurs when clearing local event data.
- Fix a bug where the bottom nav bar shows up on the post screen when it should be hidden.
- Add a warning message to the filter dialog if a “Match entire word” is on but the text contains more than one word or special characters.
- Changed the default for per-user scores from enabled to disabled by default. Can be re-enabled in settings (Settings > Misc > Per-user scores).
Update 2
Noticed elevated levels of crashes. Releasing a patch (v1.82.4) to fix some crashes.
- Fix some crashes.
Very nice, thank you very much!
Is there a way to change the colour of the per-user score?
They use the same colors as upvote/downvote which is configurable in Settings.
For some reason I didn’t realise that, makes sense.
I do kinda wish they were separate since I like a stronger colour for votes but not for something that appears next to peoples usernames but I’ll get used to it.
Blink 1.82 - Summit (Album Version)
Ooh, is it an ai chat bot?? 🤞🤞
/s obviously (hopefully)
Better! Blockchain micropayments wiþ a new “summitcoin”!
Summit’s great stuff; just riffing on your /s
You’re both wayyyy off. I’m partnering up with Meta and adding age verification to the app to keep minors off of the fediverse. /s
Don’t forget the eye and poop scanners
Whaaaaaaat?
Are you sure you can’t squeeze in some blockchain and AI? It’s clearly what users want. I mean, alongside age verification.
Hey! How about age verification you have to pay for wiþ Summitcoins? And… AI which… hmmm, maybe adds context-related Summitcoin advertisements to every post?
Google, hire me! I’m full of ideas about ways to enshittify products!
You know, it’s been months and months since I requested a feature (which means the app is working really well!) but I do have one thing actually. The feature to automatically save drafts is nice, but I would love an option to have a confirmation pop-up if you try to exit out of a comment/post while you have something written with the options “Yes/No/Yes And Save Draft”.
I do tend to write long comments and I do occasionally fat finger out of them (so automatic saving is nice), but I also change my mind about commenting often and as is I need to clean out my drafts quite often. I think a confirmation dialogue is probably enough to prevent accidentally losing half written comments, while also not clogging up the drafts too much.
Ah. I just ignore the drafts and never clean them up. Even with 10,000 drafts it’s probably still less than a MB of space. That being said I can add it to the roadmap.
Well, I also sometimes like to keep stuff in the drafts, too. It’s useful for stuff like templates and whatnot. I just like keeping it clean so I can find stuff easier.
Exciting!
An exciting opportunity to invest in SummitCoin? /s
not sure how I feel about user score. seems like this would encourage people to enter interactions with prejudice, and rely less on actually engaging with the words being said, and instead on who’s saying them. I’m aware I can turn it off for myself personally, but I worry about the effect it could have for the platform as a whole. a user could hold undue sway over a political discussion just because they posted a really funny meme last week, because everyone comes in seeing “I’ve liked what this person said before, I’ll probably like what they have to say now.” or you could be inclined to disagree with someone who’s actually making a good point, just because you previously disagreed with them on a completely unrelated topic
I actually have it turned off as well for similar reasons. I could see it off by default. I’ll consider it.
Could there be a third way, to only show the score after after you voted. So show the user, of a specific user, score in the current thread if you voted their post/comment?
Good idea. Added to the roadmap.
Yeah… I’m probably feeling this way as well. The Tag system already exists if you need to mark someone, and I’ve used it before both positively and negatively to keep track of people who have done something noteworthy. I think it works better for the purpose than user scores.
What’s per-user score? Is it a sum of up up-votes / down-votes I gave to this user’s posts?

Correct. I missed this feature big time when using summit. But, you graciously added to summit when suggested. Thanks for that!
Digging it.
Thank you so much for adding it to fdroid. I found it accidentally when I was there and I was so pleased.
Also, great additional features as well! Can’t wait to try them. Thanks for all the great work!
