Quite terrible to have all that wealth in the hands of so few. We should distribute that more evenly to raise the quality of living for more.

I have 512GB of ECC in one server, 64GB of DDR5 in my desktop, and probably another couple of hundred GB or so of DDR4 from previous desktops in a box on my shelf.

Starting to worry about a home invasion by one of the AI companies.

I’ve got at least 256 in sticks lying around. Maybe another 128 or so in SBCs and laptops with soldered ram.

Thankfully, OpenAI will barely survive 2026, and will die n 2027. We shouldn’t have to hear too much more about him.

I have previously posted about having a set of 20cl rum bottles, each bottle being dedicated to when I no longer have to live on the same planet as particular bastards that do their best to ruin everything they touch.

I recently bought another set of 20cl rum bottles, and I am thinking of dedicating them to AI companies crashing and burning…

But I am worried, they may not crash and burn, some other person will just buy them before they die completely…

I like it, however I’ve taken the opposite strategy and simply drink to cope with their existence in the present.

            I don't have a problem

I don’t like having too many open bottles at once. Shame distilling even just for personal consumption is illegal here as I would love to make some of my own spirits to go with my mead. Easier storage for spirits too tbh.

It’s not wine, it doesn’t go off quickly. There’s this concept of the “infinity bottle” where you make your own ever-evolving blend of leftovers. It’s usually associated with whiskey but can work well for rums.

Not a bad idea, but as I mostly like making my own so my collection currently is about 15 bottles of plum mead, couple apple mead and a couple of cider.

I haven’t decided yet, so far the best I have thought of is “the bottle of the unknown bad guy”, a bottle reserved for a when someone dies and you draw a sigh of relief.

Next he’ll be paying off politicians to make it legal for police to come to your door and seize your RAM for ‘national security’. There’ll be a huge right wing media campaign, funded by the taxpayer, under the heading ‘The War Against Home RAM’. People who own their own computers will be labelled ‘terrorists’.

What’s terrible is that the tech industry is constantly engineering for planned failure. Nothing ever just lasts the way it should. People literally think it makes sense to buy a new phone every 2 years when that’s actually bat shit crazy. There isn’t any RGB, folding ass gimmick that takes away from that fact. They make it an issue because they can’t just come out with what will essentially be peak for modern PC. Capitalism ruins everything.

So, so many fewer people agree with him that with the rest of us.

It’s quite terrible we’re slipping into a technocracy because building my own PC is becoming cost prohibitive for the first time since the fucking 60s.

This reminds me of the work being done on grid and distributed computing up to the mid-2000s.

The idea is that your computer does your work but it can also do the work of others, assuming the work can be divided up into small chunks.

And it’s not limited to processing tasks! There are grid computer implementations that distribute storage across fleets of machines to improve redundancy, reduce the need for centralised file servers, etc.

But it was always intended to be implemented at the organisation level (work, school, uni). At home you’d be unlikely to need it, but you could always opt in.

I think the main survivors from this era are distributed computing programs (Folding@Home, crypto mining malware, etc.)
