A new hidden camera investigation by Marketplace shows how some stores are selling e-scooters and e-bikes with top speeds much higher than provincial speed limits and with recommended rider ages younger than provincial regulations allow.
Once again, just create dedicated bike/scooter lanes with a speed limit and require helmets (full-face for 20mph or above)
Meanwhile cars… sky is the limit.
Not for all ages tho
In the USA, a 15 year old can drive an F250
Maybe in a few places but this is not a common thing. Possible, but not common.
8 states in the USA, and the rest are 16 year old minimum age… so very common in the USA for a teen to be driving big ass trucks
Those are mostly empty states (New Mexico, the Dakotas, Montana and Idaho) and also mostly permits, often requiring a licensed adult in the car until at least 16.
It’s still dangerous but not as ridiculous as you’re trying to make it sound.
There’s no significant difference between a 15 year old and a 16 year old
After reading an article about how the number of cases of crushed jaw has skyrocked here in Sweden after e-scooters became a thing, I have gone from passive disinterest in them to actively wanting them gone as soon as possible.
Also, here it isn’t unusual to see kids riding these devices all over the place.
The cheapest brand new escooter here costs just 990SEK about 140 CAD, which is insane.
Just give your kid a proper bike at the right age obviously.
The rent-a-scoots are the worst.
Yeah, here in Stockhom we have an extensive and well developed public transport system, the rented scooters is taking revenue from the public infrastructure and dumping it into private equity.
So not only are they unsafe and cluttering the sidewalks, they take money from scalable public services and sending that to unscalable private companies, while forcing the city to deal with the issues they cause.
I am fine with rent-a-bikes, that scheme worked really well and was a brilliant complement to public transport, but the rentble scooters is a plauge and should be banned.
Mental. Especially those e-scooters with their puny front wheels… I really don’t think they’re designed to go fast. We have a minimum age of 14 years here. They don’t require a drivers license but do need insurance on the road and there’s a maximum speed of 20 km/h. Still accident number double or triple each year. And I don’t think we enforce our rules all that much. Police has more important stuff to do.
I’d really love to ride one of those illegal e-bikes at 120 km/h though. Sounds like a lot of fun.
Wish we had 32 km/h for e-bikes. It’s 25 in Germany and that’s just too slow and all the cars will try some dangerous maneuvers to get past the bicycle in the crowded city.
As someone who fell of a 25kph scooter, I’m terrified of all those faster scooters.
That being said, I know of people with 80kph scooters, and I might get one too ((but with a) full face helmet and pads, and b) limit of 50kph.))
