The Good Place. Funny, compelling, I cried through the final episode. It also doesn’t waste your time, things will happen mid-season that any other show would have dragged out for the season finale.
Obligatory Firefly mention.
As a scifi buff: Battlestar Galactica, and The Expanse were excellent. Nightsky was also a really good watch even though it was slow moving, and was more about relationships than SciFi
My name is Earl.
Mr Robot. So many twists and turns, and had me absolutely fascinated from start to finish
(Staying spoiler friendlyish) My absolute favorite little bit in Mr. Robot is the thing that they do the thing on 5/9. In the IT infrastructure world “five nines” means 99.999% uptime/availability, which means you have less than five and a half minutes of downtime a year.

15 Storeys High is probably my favourite show ever
I genuinely get a little pang of pride when I see Benedict Wong in huge blockbuster films and TV series and think “Aw, our Errol’s done well”
Station 11
Such a beautiful story.
I watched it not long ago while I was going through some hard times. It made me feel human again. It really sparked pretty much every emotion, I adored it.
For All Mankind
What a show. The first marine seige on the lunar mining camp is as cool as it gets. Tracy Stevens is a badass.
How many seasons have you seen? I watched the first two and they are great but I lost interest after the first episodes of season 3. How was the last seasons?
The Eps do go downhill after season 2.
Season 1 is the best, all that janky early space stuff is so cool. Season 2 is pretty good, but some episodes are a bit weak.
The first episode of S3 was a big let-down. The out of control space hotel, all the obvious engineering design flaws, all those astronauts in one place reacting way too slowly to a crisis. The commander deferring station decisions to Karen Baldwin (not an astronaut), and the convenient dearh of Sam. And the cheesy tension building “if it exceeds 4 gees it explodes” felt like a mediocre sci fi thriller.
But I kept watching the show. Some of the dramas get progressively sillier and higher stakes, which is entertaining, if you can suspend your technical engineering disbelief, and common sense. It becomes more predictable in building up a character and getting you attached to them right before putting them in mortal peril.
But I still watched them all because I’m not a quitter.
Plenty of great shows that ended poorly.
Maybe I’m just in a negative frame of mind but I won’t recommend any shows at this point.
I was a fan of Lost when it was on the air, dumbest ending ever; ruined the show. I was a fan of Game of Thrones; the show ended in season 6 and the last two seasons ruined the previous 6.
Hmmm ok, X-Men ‘97 was very well written and I liked it but that’s only one season and the main guy responsible for making it good got canned.
Mr Robot
Came here to recommend Mr Robot as well. The ending of the series was perfectly planned, so it loops around perfectly to the beginning of the series. It was a nice contrast to something like Game of Thrones, where they clearly had no good ending planned and just rushed through to get something done.
I remember watching the end of Mr Robot and going “holy shit.”
Since everyone already recommended what I was going to recommend, I’m going to say fuck it. I’m going to recommend FLCL. It’s not the best anime ever but it is extremely unique and has some of the best music of any anime. And both the anime’s sub and dub are great. If you speak english I’d recommend the dub. The series is only 6 episodes. This anime has aged like wine for me with each subsequent viewing making the anime better and better.
For my favorite comedy (more “haha” comedy), it’s gotta be It’s always sunny in philadelphia.
did you see the modern adult swim seasons? i loved the OG episodes and haven’t gotten around to seeing them yet
No I have not and I will continue to pretend they don’t exist. First and foremost IMO the FLCL story was a complete story on it’s own with beginning and end, so I don’t exactly understand why they made more instead of just making a new anime. Second, I heard the new seasons were not nearly as good. I do listen to the new pillows music though so a new Pillows album is a silver lining I guess.
here’s a few i haven’t seen mentioned yet:
oz - uncompromising US prison drama
garth merenghi’s darkplace - deadpan british tele-horror parody
the mighty boosh - absurdist musical stage-theatre from the UK
dirk gently’s holistic detective agency - fast-paced comedy with an interesting premise that plays out like a douglas adams novel
happy - netflix series which combines a gritty procedural crime-drama with a cartoon mascot. Very violent and dark humour
Oz was really good. Lotta gay rape/sex, but a really good show.
