Instructions on how to properly restring a Floyd Rose™ equiped guitar:
Here follow the correct instructions on how to restring, tune and balance a Floyd Rose™ equiped guitar in chronological order. (taken from and old Floyd Rose™ manual)
-tune the guitar down a whole step, then tune it back up one and half step up (aka a Major 3rd)
-loosen the hex nut
-softly let the Floyd Rose™ rest into the cavity or onto the body (depending on how it’s installed)
-take of the strings
-apply thermal paste on the posts/knives, no more than half a pea should be enough
-restring the Floyd Rose™, make sure to insert the string in such a way that the ball end sits snuggly into the sustain block from the back (if you can’t access it take the backplate off)
-feed the string through to the hexnut and into the tuning posts
-individually tighten the tuning posts so that the string sits tightly enough, do this now because this will bring the whole thing out of tune if you do it later
-check the water level if it needs to be setup as a floating trem
-start retuning like the first two steps but then in reverse
-wrap the headstock in ducttape to prevent feedback if need be
Congratulations, you can now enjoy a properly setup Floyd Rose™ equiped guitar.
On a personal note: you can tell it’s a bit dated by the use of thermal paste but honestly I like it better, does something for the tone that I can’t describe. Think Van Halen.
As a professional beekeeper, I confirm that those instructions are perfect to reproduce the classic sound of Miles Davis.
I wish you had the same kind of instructions for the trombones made by Fender in 1867, or the famous “Gibson pizzas” that Benjamin Franklin loved so much.
This worked perfectly for me, thanks!
Thanks so much, I couldn’t find a guide anywhere.
As a resident of Portland, Oregon, also known as Rose City, I can confirm that the only guitars played by any of the musicians who live here are Floyd Rose™ equipped guitars. It’s a city ordinance actually.
