What has happened to the place today? Everything I’ve blocked in the past has returned and is still not staying blocked today.

Did your home instance federate with someplace new? Pretty sure that’s what happened to me when I got bombarded by hentai and furry porn a couple weeks ago. It was a veritable tidal wave of shit I had to block.

That’s what I ended up doing. I really wish there was a flag for sexual content in general that would be easy to omit from the feed. I don’t wanna block entire instances as they might have discussions and content on non-sexual topics that I’d like to participate in.

The first thing everyone that I’ve recommended Lemmy to sees is massive amounts of porn when they make their accounts. Telling them they need to block instances is a major hurdle as they don’t even know what an instance is when they migrate over.

Most end up not bothering and going right back to Reddit.

That really sucks! Next time maybe point them towards piefed, where it actually prompts you to filter out NSFW stuff in account creation. I haven’t seen any porn on my piefed account.

Some people have an account on many many many different instances and cross post to them all from different accounts so that when you block their account on one instance you’ll still see the posts from their alts. Could this be part of what you’re seeing?

Thanks for all the replies. I’m using Voyager 2.45.1 so not really sure if this is an update issue or like y’all said new migration.

I think that people can migrate their accounts to a new instance which effectively unblocks them to you, because you only blocked them in their original instance.

I have definitely seen what you describe, but only with users rather than instances or communities, which gives my theory some rope.

Are you using connect as a client? Because the same thing happened to me, I wonder if it’s a bug with the client or with the server software.

    1. it’s entirely-possible that a filesystem-corruption has happened, destroying some settings by bitrot.

    2. it is entirely-possible that there is a new bug in the server-instance, after an update ( don’t know if there’s been any update to its OS or to its lemmy-server code )

    3. it is entirely-possible that some attack is compromising its function ( statistically it’d happen, sooner or later )

    4. There is a fundamental flaw in the reddit system of “organizing” subreddits, & the replication of that flaw throughout the fediverse:

ALL users have to keep wasting time blocking stuff that we’ve already blocked, because there’s no hierarchy-of-communities.

I don’t have any ability to block the entire Gaming category, & then never see anything more in it.

Same with Hentai & Furry porn, same as [email protected] mentioned.

EVERYBODY has to keep “putting out fires”, endlessly, because the architecture prevents the right-answer from correcting-the-problem.

I’ve no problem with multi-inheritence hierarchy ( X-Plane ought be in Aviation, and in Simulation, and in Gaming ), but to sabotage the whole fucking world’s effort/resources, forever, to protect non-hierarchy is retarded.

I’d re-structure the fediverse so that some ML worked at sorting-out where every community belonged, & where it was unambiguous, let that stand.

Then people could block categories of stuff, & that’d be done.

I’ve blocked sooo many communities, that I’ve no idea if the ones which I see today were previously-blocked, or whether they’re just ones I hadn’t blocked yet.

but forcing all people to endlessly waste effort on that, when it should be category-by-category unless the person in-question wants finer-granularity control, that’s insanity.

Insanity which has been architected-into the fediverse’s servers.
