Following on from reports in the US (see 21:31), the Pentagon has now confirmed what’s been circulating in the media over the past hour or so.

General Randy George, they said, will be retiring from his position - effective immediately.

Various reports in the US, including from our partner network NBC News, stated the defence secretary moved to sack George.

He was expected to serve longer in the job, at least until summer, according to two officials.

George was the 41st chief of staff of the US army and started the role in September 2023.

His removal is just the latest of more than a dozen firings of top generals and admirals by Hegseth since he first took office.

    It’s never been a good idea to fire experienced commanders due to idology.
