Why don’t these shower-phone people just get a much cheaper and more durable waterproof speaker? I get wanting music or a podcast or whatever but I can’t imagine how I would watch a video with all the soap and water everywhere

Yeah because an asteroid could NEVER hit the earth and wipe is out.
I could have a heart attack or stroke and die tomorrow. So what? There’s probably extensive measures I could take to mitigate that (constant biometric monitoring, spending all my money on a personal physician entourage, strict diet and fitness regimen, etc…). Each of those extremes has a cumulative negative effect on my lived quality of life. Is it worth living in a state of paranoia to eek an extra decade out of life?
It’s what they could achieve in existing.
What achievement is building a colony of chemically sedated and artificially sustained peons on Mars at 1000x the cost of sustaining them on earth? Why is that a loftier and more noble goal than using those resources on, say, 1000 years of cultural/artistic development?
control society and keep doomsaying
Apparently looking at the raw truth of entropy and ecology is doomsaying. That’s just physics my dude, do a little soul searching and come to terms with mortality.
As for controlling society, you’re right: let’s not talk about the absurd cost of our options for space colonization and how little benefit the human race gains from it. There’s no way to control our actions, just close your eyes and imagine star trek utopias while we burn Earth’s limited fuel reserves throwing metal at Mars.

The eggs in a basket argument is just unhealthy existential dread at a planetary scale. Keeping humanity alive by grasping at uninhabitable rocks and poor simulacrums of Earth is like keeping an octogenarian alive with more and more invasive treatments.
The patient was born to walk in nature and enjoy food and sunsets; humanity evolved specifically to flourish on our blue marble with its delicate biosphere. Is it ethical to keep the patient alive with life support when they can’t walk or eat? Is it ethical to keep humanity alive in bubbles with pale imitations of earth on lifeless rocks?
We should accept that all things end and be more honest about these discussions. Humanity is no longer in its optimistic youth. We’ve matured to the natural limits of our species (and beyond them in some aspects), ask what we can do with the finite time and resources we have and not just where we can grow next.
Probably a reference to the rumors he was a minor at Diddy’s sex trafficking parties. Tho he did refute that and say he wasn’t abused
Good comedians are almost always incredibly talented. It requires introspection, a unique world view, quick wit and a good understanding of narrative timing/phrasing. All of that translates well to most projects.

Surprised to see everyone dog piling on Ted in other comments. Marriages at that time weren’t often based on strong footing and we’ll never know exactly how they felt when they married or how their feelings changed throughout life.
[Based only off of the summary] It’s easy to see Helen as a saint but it could just as easily be an unhealthy codependence. Chronic illness/pain/disability can completely erode a relationship over time. She pours more and more of herself into him without realizing (or denying) that there are aspects of a relationship that she can’t give. Doesn’t even have to be sexual, could be something as simple as a walk in the park or sharing a favorite meal outside her diet.

I have seen lots of niche stores, but what usually gets me is that they’re in very premium locations. How is that empty Custom Umbrella Emporium still open while the packed coffee shop next door can’t afford their lease?
Money laundering, probably

You think your assessment that humans are a scourge on the planet is objective and clear
Hold on, let me ask the 30,000 entire species we directly drive to extinction each year… 🦗
Your argument is “yet you participate in society” but at an even more absurd “yet you are a human” level. Yes… they are a human. But if you look at human civilization through a POSIWID lens, it can’t be anything more than a self-destructive, mass-extinction and biosphere-collapse machine. That is, factually, 99% of the measurable impact of human existence (even if we survive forever and miraculously don’t make earth uninhabitable).
The fact that millions or even billions of people can recognize this isn’t a magical trump card; your metacognition catch-22 doesn’t refute anything about the sound reasoning of the misanthrope world view.
And for the record: I’m not a misanthrope. I more firmly believe that the existence or extinction of any species is entirely neutral. It’s not strictly rational to shed tears over the death of any individual animal or species.
But I can also recognize and embrace my irrational bias as a human. It’s normal to mourn loss, or feel disgust at animal slaughter, or have diminished emotions for people physically remote & abstracted from my daily life, or crave creature comforts, or mistrust strangers… In contrast, subscribing to an ideology like the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement requires forced, rational domination of these impulses. Nobody actually wants to end human civilization in the same way that the average person doesn’t want to starve.
Optimizing for a universal and sustainable human existence isn’t about suppressing every flaw, it’s about focusing our time and energy on the most critical issues. I can still shout and scream about biosphere collapse because every extinct species has irreplaceable potential value. We obviously can’t live without pollinators, but it’s just as important that future generations will never be able to reconstruct the precise species that we evolved to cohabitate with.
Preserving beautiful and complex ecosystems is a necessity because we don’t entirely know what [in]tangible value were losing for our selfish anthropocentric existence, not because any species “deserves” to live.
Did it come with a screwdriver?

Is there any research on the danger of right on red? Theoretically existing laws prevent unsafe acceleration so any pedestrian interaction from a full stop would happen at well below 10mph. Practically, that’s not always true so I do think that it makes sense to disallow it case by case (area with high pedestrian traffic, obscured crossing), but overall it doesn’t feel much worse than turning into a driveway across a sidewalk.
Then why can the first time you go skydiving be pants shittingly terrifying but the 50th time can be pleasurable or even mundane? Your rational mind is deliberately choosing to make the first jump despite the fear and thereby taking control over the emotion.

Everyone gather round and take a close look at this specimen. Here is something very peculiar I’ve seen with the loudest ML users. They usually have a well rehearsed auth-left script with plausible talking points, but when it gets off script they show specific capitalist-coded rhetoric.
In real life, I’ve never met anyone on the left/far left who would use unemployment (especially under a capitalist-fascist hegemony) as a pejorative. The casting of unemployment as a personal failing and character flaw is a deeply capitalist narrative. The USSR, which they profess to support, widely publicized employment as a fundamental human right. It was in their Constitution!
So we have to consider: is this user dumb enough to think that furthering pro-capitalist fiction is praxis? Or are they not leftist at all, perhaps a false-flag agitant?

We just need a way to replace their real money with play money. One night we just disconnect their bank accounts, quietly move their beds into a Truman Show bubble and let them pretend they’re running the world

Would be pretty straight forward if you’re just looking at the agreements as signed. Turkey getting attacked has the option to call up NATO and this pact. Pakistan could call up Turkey but NATO would have no obligation to help. Pakistan attacking a NATO member would be the only real conflict, though these pacts are supposed to be defensive only to mitigate that.
To learn more about the specifics, I’d recommend spending 500 hours playing Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron or equivalent Paradox games.

There’s a big factor that i didn’t see in my skim of the article: painting and repainting costs time and money. In the 60s, 70s and 80s consumers had the money to mess around with colors on a whim. You had the money to buy a new car and keep it in whatever condition you like. If you changed your mind later, nbd, just change it back.
These days I don’t know anyone with a house (of those who can afford them) who can spend money on anything but the safest and most conservative options. Even if you put aside resale value of a home or vehicle, a daring color will probably fade or your tastes will change or it will clash with new surroundings or become hard to match as it’s phased out of stock.
In 10 years I’ll probably feel exactly the same about my off-white wall as I do now. It will look the same with basically any furniture. It might fade to a slightly different shade of unobtrusive white. Why would I spend my limited money to give my future self headaches? Just for a different vibe?

Ah yes, the evil liberal-capitalist climate solutions: shilling solar panels, agriculture tech, electrification, more efficient production of cement and steel
Nothing like the glorious socialist solutions of the proletariat: Chinese solar panels, Chinese agriculture tech, Chinese electrification, more efficient production of Chinese cement and steel
Turns out that every productivist ideology imagines their band-aid efficiency gains will hand wave what is essentially a growth and finite resource problem. So yeah I agree with you on some level, the free market won’t magically save us any more than an AES state market. You’re just mad because you’re hearing it from a video sponsored by the bad team

Ah yes capitalist propoganda like …scrolls most popular… Countering coronavirus disinformation, explaining vaccines and the dangers of the antivax movement, the physical limits disproving the infinite growth lie of capitalism… Yeah, there’s a lot of science fiction/fantasy topics but those are generally what gets views.
If they are pushing propoganda, they’re pretty shit at it and should probably be spending their money on manosphere podcasts instead. Honestly you should be encouraging such inefficient efforts.
This is such a stellar example of the cold war tankie mindset. Anything a capitalist funds must be evil; anything from the west is a lie; it’s my duty to counter everything coming out of their mouths; blah blah blah.
When I’m old and falling apart, I’d rather have a humane assisted suicide option be socially acceptable instead of an excruciating death by random chance. The rich and powerful are always going to live longer but maybe less at risk populations (read: poor, minority, children) will die from negligence
True, but also the commandments aren’t actually numbered. IIRC, there are 13 “Shalls” and “Shall nots”. So Catholics lump that section in with the first (no other gods, etc.) while the Protestants make room by joining “don’t covet wife/property”. There’s arguments to support both sides when looking at the historical context but on that specific issue I’d lean toward the Catholic interpretation making more sense considering god is telling people to make statues shortly after (Exodus 25:18). Either way it’s silly to be arguing over rules that bronze age people invented.
