in general, investing in land is for the rich/gamblers. no reason to do that versus the stock market.

I would really like to learn to snowboard/ski. I’m learning to drive soon and I’m hoping I’ll be able to take some time to go to the mountains in the winter. That costs money though.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do YOU consider geographical isolation a good or bad thing in this case?
2·3 days agoGenerally, isolation makes it cost-prohibitive to invest in a place. The extra distance adds cost. The lower population density reduces returns. If you look at Iceland, Northern Russia, Madagascar, island nations, these places tend to get left behind relative to dense population centers. You can mitigate conflict with cooperation and sound policy. You can’t mitigate the basic costs of doing business.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why does the US put so much emphasis on high school and also nostalgia for high school?
912·3 days agoChildren are not particularly discriminating consumers. They’ll watch pretty much anything shiny that you put in front of them, because they don’t know any better. A moderately well written film to an adult will literally be “the best thing” a teen has ever seen. When you catch a teen’s interest early, they’ll probably continue be interested in your brand for the next 10-20 years, at least. That money adds up. The attention they get from sharing everything with each other adds up.
Adults need to be impressed, and even then their interest will be moderated. It’s a lot harder to make something a lot of adults are excited about.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Can you really seperate the art from the artist?
5·5 days agoI think Rowling and West are both examples of where the person’s behavior later changed the way people interpret their art. That doesn’t happen for every piece of art. Like, Hitler made some really nice paintings of flowers. I loved almost everything I saw with Kevin Spacey in it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is it true that the education system is crap in America?
10·5 days agoIt depends on the neighborhood. The poorer the neighborhood, the worse the schools. The poorer the state, the worse the schools. I don’t think it’s really that much different from any other country in that respect. It’s just that America has extremely high income inequality, so there are a lot of blighted areas with blighted schools. Some states in the US are developed and some are rural backwater. The more rural backwater your state is, the worse the overall standard for the schools is going to be. Meaning, in general, even the best schools in a backwater state will be worse off than an average school in a wealthy city.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Can justice still be delivered if the crime happened outside one's jurisdiction from this specific scenario?
5·9 days agoIf you’re seriously wealthy, you could at least get a consultation with some mercenary groups. I saw one American who married into Saudi who managed to coordinate a rescue for herself. But generally when regular people get abducted abroad in countries with weak/corrupt governments, they are totally fucked. No one will violate laws, instigate conflict, put themselves at risk to come get you.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•People who live in a theocracy; is social climbing through the religion possible or is it just fascism with the religion esthetic?
9·13 days agobehind the bastards did a 4 part series on mohammad bin salman. he is the son of his father’s THIRD wife, and apparently by birth his father was the 25th son of the king. as in, his father absolutely never should’ve gotten the throne, and then he should’ve never gotten the throne. however, apparently saudi arabia has a royal culture of people just being paid massive amounts in oil money irrespective of how productive they are, so bin salman’s dad got more power over his siblings by actually doing his job. then son of the 3rd wife over here did the same thing.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Question for those who didn't learn cursive
13·13 days agoI once saw a signature that was a circle with a line. like O----. And that was on his driver’s license, like he chose that.
Sounds like it’s time to talk about it, because if you’ve been sleeping with him daily for a while he should be excited to call you his girlfriend. If you want a steady relationship, and he doesn’t want to have one with you, maybe that’d be a sign to pull back from this person.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do people hate each other more each passing day, or is it just hate getting more and more blatant with internet?
0·19 days agoYou see it more because it’s on the internet. In real life people keep a lot of thoughts to themselves.
Someone announced that there was an error with the bar exam, and February testers would have to re-take. I’m not even there yet but the horror I felt.
