They say that we can handle discovering alien life, what we’re not ready for is discovering human life on another planet. I think the thing we’re really not ready for is when that UFO door opens, the alien representative comes out, and then squints into the crowd and goes “D-Dave? When did you get here?!” And some dude approaches the alien and they dab each other up like old friends.

I will use this as an opportunity to once again state that Jared Leto’s Joker does not deserve the hate he gets (Jared Leto himself notwithstanding). He’s a gangster with a touch of camp (his purple Lamborghini has custom Gotham plates reading “HAHAHA,” c’mon!) and gives off the sort of vibes that makes you WANT to see Batman punch him. Joker should not be “cool” or “compelling.” He’s a crazy dude in clown make-up. IRL you meet a guy with a Joker poster on the wall, you know that you should probably leave. Same should be the case in Batman’s universe.

  • I grew up Southern Baptist. A friend of mine got married to a marginally Catholic dude and the seating arrangement was that the Baptist-affiliated people were on one side of the room and the non-Baptist types on the other. There was a bar(wine and beer) and for those who don’t know, Southern Baptists have a pretty strong anti-alcohol stance.

My friend, the bride, sat me and my then-girlfriend with THE church lady. I grew up with this woman and she was the type to moralize and talk shit about everyone. So I’m like “I need a drink” and get up and cross the room to grab a beer for me and my girlfriend. I’m like the only person from the Baptist side to do this.

I sit back down and proceed to squeeze a lime into my Corona beer. Church lady pulls a full Sheila Broflowski “what what WHAT?!?” on me. “What is that?!” she asks with eyes super wide.

“This,” I say without looking at her as I squeeze my lime, “is a Corona with lime.”

    Her draw is fully agape.

“Calm down, Debbie,” one of the cool-aunt types from my old church says, “he’s 21 and a beer is no big deal.”

  • At the risk of opening a can of worms: this is a paradox well-known to Christianity. Jesus teaches us to include the marginalized, to love our “neighbor” without limits. But then Jesus also gives instructions about when to remove people from the community and, of course, expected people to stop being assholes if they truly want to follow Him (Jesus called this “repentance” and “sinning no more”). The assholes made use of the the inclusiveness bit and managed to overrun the Church while also pushing the marginalized out.

  • Still popular. Still especially popular with Japanese couples. There’s a whole thing out here where they do a kind of wedding reenactment just for the photos (either on the beach or in churches—I knew of churches that made over a $1m a year just from these photo shoots). Since the one-two punch of Covid and Trump a lot of this has diminished. But OP’s post is something that has likely happened more than once out here.

I’ve had a 1999 and a 2007 Nissan Frontier. Both “King cab” (meaning only jump seats in the back, not full back seats). The 1999 was perfect. The new Frontiers are like the size of the old Titans, it’s ridiculous.

I’m an EV convert. I really like the Rivian pick-up for a lot of things, but the size is just too much (that and the cost). I currently drive a 2017 Kia Soul EV (and I had a Nissan Leaf before that) and it’s just great. There are a few times where I wish I still had a truck though. When the Soul winds up becoming my son’s car in a few years, I’m hoping that maybe I can swing getting a Slate. I also live in Hawai’i and kei trucks/vans are very popular here. Smaller vehicles with well-thought-out design are the best.
